2012 - A Chelmorton Year

Dec 25 Christmas morning in St Johns Chelmorton. Vicar John Fountain has created a village tradition, children walk up Chelmorton Main Street to get their presents blessed on Christmas morning. Asecond tradition in the making is a balloon launch of white doves with messages of Christmas.

Dec 16 Carols in the church of Chelmorton. Carol service and a very special modern three act play by the children finishing with a traditional nativity scene. Church warden Irene Ottey congratulated the children on an excellent effort, well done vicar John Fountain, David Race and all the Mums.

2012 Dec 12 A new vicar for the Dioceese Parishes of Taddington, Chelmorton, Monyash, Hartington, Biggin and Earl Sterndale.

Revd Richard John Benson instituted for the Parishes of Taddington, Chelmorton, Monyash, Hartington, Biggin and Earl Sterndale. A dark winters evening, breath steamy in the frozen air on the footsteps of the path to Monyash. Visitors came in from th darkness to a Rainbow of light. Colours of clergy hoods greated with warmth and nearly a hundred folk for the evening institution service of the new vicar Richard Benson. Bishop of Derby Alastair Redfern in his golden mitre headed the service, he spoke of modern day stress, complex lives and re focused the congregation on Christmas and a time for families. Those representing others greeted new vicar Richard, Derbyshire Dales Council, the Parish councils, The Royal British Legion and heads of all the local schools, the Methodist minister and a Roman Catholic representative were all in the que with warmth and welcome. Irene Ottey warden of St Johns Chelmorton acted as warden for the evening with others at Monyash. Vicar Richard swore his oathes, poured water into the font and rang out the bells. The congregation roared out the last hymn so load we could hardly hear James playing the organ, 'Onward Christian soldiers' in celebration.

Chelmorton together in Advent Dec 2nd Elle may was the child to light the first advent candel at at St Johns  First Sunday of the month family service. Only days later the first winter snow fell on friday Dec 6th leaving a solid covering for the morning vehicles leaving the village.

November rain. Wet wet and wet for NOvember as roads closed towards Ashbourne an Illy willy water returned Chelmorton docks at the bottom of Main Street. A very nasty three car crash closed the Brielor Bar junction for all afternoon of Sunday 25 as the air ambulance arrived and fire men chopped tops of cars to get folk out of their vehicles. Then amongst the last days of the month during a very heavy rain fall the village fell into darkness as a power pillon pole burst into flames and shut down the electricity. Meanwhile many villagers had been in Leek the previous week for a visit to the Leek golf club attending the auction of fields in the middle of the village. Two plots, one a little under 4 acres sold for ten thousand an acre, the second bid just under ten thousand per acre and was withdrawn against its reserve. A later private deal saw it sold. Very early in the month a plot towards Pipinwell raised near eleven thousand an acre for what seem to be record grass land prices.

Richard Benson, new vicar arrives for Chelmorton. Welcome service is Sunday October 28th, the family service date and a new time set for 11.30 to welcome the new vicar to St Johns Chelmorton. First service of the month family service but beware its also half term.

New vicar Richard Benson and wife Kate a retired school teacher. Taddington, Chelmorton, Flagg, Monyash. Hartington, Biggin and Earl Sterndale have a new incumbent the reverend Richard Benson. In the past 14 years he has looked after 6 churches in Lincolnshire where he was a padre with an RAF squadron. Richard and Kate are moving into the vicarage in Monyash, they have three daughters and a baby grand daughter.

October  A busy month in Chelmorton , The fish and chip van was busy most every Thursday and also the second Tuesday library van had been well supported. Carol Allcock had her McMillan coffee morning, the first Sunday of the month family service was packed as a double event for Harvest Festival. The service trebled up to focus on preperations for the childrens parts in the Christmas taleau that will take a play like pattern for 2012. Village institute film circle was Warhouse, first frost layed a white carpet across the fields for the morning of Oct 14 when the joint benface service delivered tea and coffe for all the folk of the diocees..

Oct 14 Joint service at Chelmorton. Fields white in the sunshine of Main Street, Chelmorton for the first frost of the year as folk walked upto the golden locust shinning in the Autumn sunshine. The benifec churchs of Taddington all came together in October for a Sunday morning service at Chelmorton. Bishop Alistair sent greetings, the sermon focused on building numbers, youth and the future of the church. The congregation no youngsters but representing all the benefice stayed for tea and coffee as guests of Celmorton.

Oct 7 Harvest Festival for family service. A near full church when family service clashed with harvest festival. A joy to see so much youth in the church. John Fountain joined the motivation of the youngsters to the adults and then recieved hampers of local produce for Harvest Festival service that saw the church near full.

July 25th Church and sport for special view in Chelmorton Institute. Chelmorton together on Sunday group presented Chariots of Fire special film night, thoughts from the producer and others and a showing of the entire film with free cheese and wine. The church, faith and sport for Abrahams and Liddle in the classic movie in the very pre week of the Olympics.

July 14th Buxton Carnival Chelmorton Float entry. Second place prize for float tableau. 2012 Jubilee year for another tractor and hay trailer float entry to Buxton carnival, theme remained Elvis with music and fancy dress. Traditional square hay bails provided by Johm Gould, a smart red tractor  by David Bagshaw and long bed eight wheel flat trailer by Paul Bagshaw. After the wettest June on record the sun shone for town carnival. More than a dozen Elvis cotumes with the float, singers and walkers pluss more village children collecting a rain of pennies donnated from the busy crowds. The blue ticket second prize resplendant in the tractor window for the route arund Buxton to huge crowds as Elvis Music, Hound dog and the like boomed out of the speakers on the trailer. With great energy and excitment the scene is set for ext year, theme again, 'Elvis returns 2013'.

1st July Roxy Mary Mycock St Johns Chelmorton. Family service and baptism of Roxy born 10th August 2011, Vicar John Fountain took a service to a standing room only service of more than one hundred and thirty folk in the congregation. People arrived to the service in a mix of sunshine and showers and cyclists in the Chelmorton Flagg bicycle race. All things bright and beautiful to start roused the roof with all its new led. New carpets in the Lady Chapel look resplendent. Morgause Lomas completed the reading and Vicar John inspired the family service, first of the month Ionian special. Mary on the Organ to complete the last hymn of 'One more step along toe road' Irene Ottey and Howard Clarke present to oversee a bursting collection as guests of the the christening moved across the road to a hog roast at the Church Inn and watch the return of the cycle race.

1st July High Peak Road Race HQ at Chelmorton . The third running of the annual High Peak Road Race  Sunday 1st Juy weather damp and showery.The events HQ was again  at Chelmorton Institute from where riders set of at 10.00am. The finish at 12.00 noon in cooling rain. The race is part of the TLI Cycling calendar of age related cycle races which cater for all abilities and is a joint promotion by Sharrow, Whirlow Wheelers and Norton Wheelers, three long established clubs from the Sheffield area. A full field of 80 riders will be competing for the 500 pounds prize list. Riders will be handicapped into three groups for age and ability. In previous years riders came from South Yorkshire, Nottingham, Stafford and Manchester. The furthest last year was from South London, the youngest was a fifteen year old from Gloucestershire. L ast days of June. Chelly docks, freak rain, Olympic torch and football penalties. Rain showers and sun shine. In the last week of June Duke of Edingburgh candidates lined the roads and paths as they fought the showers of rain. A little grass was rapidly cut in short bursts of sunshine. Freak rain arrived Thursday 28th July. Grids of Main Street were over run. More rain in a shorter period than seen in a decade. Floods around the country arrived in Chelmorton. Chelly docks returned to the dip of Main Street and children were set to swim if not for the Amazonian brown mud of the twirling waters closing the road. Locals upturned the storm grids to let the mud escape. Football fever with scores not favourable to England for penalties and then Thursday 28th had the Olympic torch visit Buxton. A tour of the dome, then Buxton roads almost closed for the procession. Samsung blue truck and Coca Cola red like a tour de France carnival in miniature. The torch proceeded to Ashbourne where the town paraded its Shrove Tide footballs. Last leg to Derby for the evening.

May 27 to June 5th

Queens Jubilee All ages involved to make the event inclusive to all in Chelmorton focused around the Village War Memorial Institute. David & Tracy Prout championed the event for an outstanding run of celebrations from a village full of bunting to flames on the low and fun in the fields.

Sun 27 May  bunting in the village by David Prout and his team. Red white and blue pennants side to side of Main Street. A smart yellow tele handler got the knots tight at regulation sixteen feet to allow the double decker bus visits to the village. Even the trees toward the Ditch got dressed as Jubilee fever takes a stronger grip. Smart flag of Jubilee dates adorns the village institute and sunshine looking favourable for a busy week of celebrations.

Wood collection during the week may 28th for the beacon. Call David Prout on 01298 85238 if you have spare wood. Sun 3rd Jun, 10am Family service at St Johns, 3pm bell ringing. Mon 4th June The Beacon. 9.30pm meet at the Church Inn. Procession up the Low to light the beacon for 10.15. Suitable footwear and a torch. Tuesday 5th June. Fancy dress competition on the village green at 12 noon. Official opening of new children's playground at 12.30. Children's sports 1 till 4pm rear of Institute. Bring a picnic. Cieidh in the Village Institute during the evening. If wet weather the afternoon sports will be held inside the Institute.

May 29 Standing only in theChelmorton Library Van. Last Tuesday visit of may for the Derbyshire Dales mobile Library visit to the village of Chelmorton. May snow cleared and back in the heat wave, first grass cut from some of the fields and the England stone marker on Chelmorton resplendent in its refurbishment. David Prout and his Jubilee team had even dressed the village with Jubilee flags just in time for the library van visit. It has been a joy to see a resurgence in the library van use, for the sunshine morning the van was stuffed to full of villagers making great use of the resource, large print, small print, fiction and fact in the hands of many as they returned home on Main Street with the booty of books.

March Lent in Monyash. Lent lunches, soup, cheese and fruit in the Lady Chapel at St Leonard's church Monyash. For 2012 they are 12.30 until 2pm from 1st March, every Thursday in March. Proceeds donated to Village Aid Africa.

21st Feb Funeral of Ron Standage . There were prayers for Ron Standage at the joint benefice service at Taddintgton, the funeral is set for Chelmorton Tuesday February 21st

12th Feb Joint Benefice Taddington. Monyash Earl Sterndale, Chelmorton and the whole benefice turned out for the joint Sunday Service at Taddington. 'Morning has broken' rallied the congregation. John Fountain blessed and David Race took the service. Tea coffee and many biscuits followed in a social gathering at Taddington church Sunday 12th February. John Fountain reported on the Christingle celebrations at Taddington school, they were successful after being moved from Sunday to Monday, a result of the heavy snow.

24th January Chinese New year. Closer to home for the evening of Tuesday January 24th starting at 7pm there will be a public meeting in the village institute to plan events for the Queens Jubilee Jubilee Day June 5th 2012, an open meeting for ideas and plans already in place. Volunteers required to organise events and appeal to all ages so as to make the day inclusive to all in Chelmorton.

8th January Joint Benefice service at St Johns Chelmorton , Taddington, Flagg, Earl Sterndale to Monyash turned out in strength  for a joint service at Chelmorton Sunday 8th January. Spring sunshine to start and winter chill to finish as the cold winds of Chelmorton stirred across the Low. Warmth inside as Lilly & her Mum rallied the refreshments. James Kirkwood on the organ. Irene Ottey and Howard Clark as wardens in attendance. John Fountain explained the children's work Angel hands display for Christmas and David Race co-ordinated the sermon with words of young people, messy church, education and the grasp of a babes hand marking commitment. Splendid to see the church so full 'something is going on in the village churches' over 200 for Taddington with its festive carols 'somethings going on in the villages and its not just Christmas' remarked David Race to a warm and full congregation for the joint beneface service of St John the Baptis Chelmorton.
